People reported that at an appearance on SiriusXM radio, the 22-year-old performed “How Will I Know.” Houston is one of many music icons that Smith has found inspiring.
He told People, “I love legends like Whitney Houston. I love female voices and female divas.” Smith found fame with his hit song “Stay With Me” and he got to sing it live with fellow singer Mary J. Blige.
SPIN reported that the duet with Blige came this week at the Apollo Theater in New York City. Also this week, he made an appearance on David Letterman with a performance of his song.
For Houston’s classic hit, Smith took the tempo and cut it down, as well as removing the orchestration that Houston’s version is known for. With only the sounds of the piano, this makes for a beautiful tribute to Houston and her music.
Smith is set to tour the United States in the fall. Check out the video below for Smith’s cover.
