Trial set for Baltimore police officer that slashed dog’s throat

A trial date has been set for a Baltimore police officer accused of slitting a dog’s throat after the animal was subdued.

The Associated Press reported that court documents filed on Thursday show that the trial for Jeffrey Bolger is scheduled for July 28. The 49-year will face animal cruelty charges after he allegedly slashed the throat of a 7-year-old Chinese shar-pei breed.

According to CNN, the dog, named Nala, escaped from her owner’s home on Saturday morning. Officers were called after a woman reported that she had been bitten by the dog.

The shocking thing is that after responding officers contained Nala using a pole around her neck, Bolger allegedly slit her throat with a knife. The pooch later died of blood loss.

"It was a complete violation of protocol," said police spokesman Eric Kowalczy. "It's not often police speak out against one of their own, but we are all truly appalled."

Bolger was charged with the crime Wednesday and released on his own recognizance.

He had been with the police force since the early ‘90s.
