U.S.-Germany World Cup match on ESPN draws 10.8 million viewers

Viewership was still strong on Thursday for the final World Cup group match between Germany and the U.S, despite the early start time.

The match started at 9 a.m. on the West Coast, noon EST, but still managed to attract an average of 10.8 million viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The 1-0 loss to Germany averaged an overnight 6.7 rating, which is the third ever highest.

The WatchESPN app also saw 1.7 million people tune in, likely whoever couldn't take time off, to watch the game online and Univision added 750,000 from their stream.

While definitely a strong audience, the number doesn't even come close to Sunday night's U.S.-Portugal match which snagged 18.2 million viewers, with 22.96 million tuning in at the peak. The game was played at a much more favorable time, however.

Those who tuned in through WatchESPN for Sunday's match were lower than yesterday's though, at 1.4 million, which was then a new record for the app.
