Vanderbilt beats Texas in 10, advance to College World Series Final

In an elimination game Saturday Vanderbilt’s Tyler Campbell hit a bases-loaded infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Commodores a 4-3 win over Texas.

Campbell had just 21 at-bats this whole season when he stepped to the plate in the 10th, according to ESPN.com. Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin told reporters, “That’s what these moments are about, when kids have been practicing all year and not getting in games. Then their number is called.

The teams battled back and forth all night, with Texas rallying twice from deficits to tie the game, but could never take the lead. Longhorn Freshmans Tres Barrera, Kacy Clemens and Zane Gurwitz, the 7-8-9 hitters, combined to go 4-for-12 with three RBIs and one run, according to texassports.com.

Vanderbilt faced 54 pitches from Texas starter Parker French in just two innings of work. Reliever Morgan Cooper, who pitched 4.2 innings fanning five batters and giving up a run, replaced French.

Vanderbilt will take on Virginia this Monday in the College World Series final.
