Why the Browns cannot blame Manziel for partying ways

We all know the legendary life of 21 year old “Johnny Football,” or Johnny Manziel as his parents call him. Partying, good-times and a carefree attitude off the field has made this guy one of the more recognizable faces and names in sports today.

The Cleveland Browns knew exactly what they were getting themselves into; and so it begins.

Say what you want about the kid, he knows how to play the game of football. Despite his attitude off the field, he displays everything that you want in a leader and a player on the field. He is tough, gritty, intelligent, fearless and full of energy.

When the Browns took Manziel with the 22nd pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, they not only selected “on the field Johnny,” but also took “off the field Johnny” as well.

After the first-round of the draft was completed, Manziel and his entourage reportedly partied in New York City until five in the morning, according to TMZ.com. Stars such as Drake, Busta Rhymes, Meek Mill and Kyrie Irving were all out with him that night as they partied hard and probably missed breakfast the next morning. Manziel also took a Vegas-trip where he was seen sipping champagne out of an inflatable-swan.

At least the guy has good-taste.

Now, reports have surfaced that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam wants the youngster to “tone it down,” according to CBSsports.com. Haslam is directly responding in reference to Manziel’s latest occurrence: an Instagram video from two-weeks ago where he says: “I can’t hear you, I have too much money in my F------ hand,” as he spoke to an imaginary cell-phone made of cash.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, “this latest antic did not sit well with Haslam, as he instructed his staff to at least have a talk with Johnny about being more savvy as he deals with social media," Mortensen said on ESPN's NFL Insiders, according to Cleveland.com.

What is Manziel’s response to all of this? Well, not one that would have the Browns breathing easier.

Manziel claims he is not doing anything wrong. "Everybody goes out and has fun. I'm not doing anything that's putting myself in a harmful situation. I'm not doing anything that's putting my team or jeopardizing what I do here throughout the week, or what I'm looking forward to doing this season,” Manziel said.

Manziel is an employee of the Cleveland Browns; so Haslam is his boss.

The obvious sentiment would be to pile-on Manziel for his partying ways. Let’s understand though that the Browns drafted this player, and this person. They could have taken at least 10 to 20 other players in that spot. Sometimes if you want the on-field brilliance, then you have to suffer through the off-field non-sense. Some people are just wired differently and “Johnny Football” might fit that category.

You can try to change the man to have both sides see greater results, but negative results may also come, so be careful Cleveland.
