Zach Randolph signs extension with Memphis Grizzlies

Memphis Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph signed a two-year, $20 million contract extension on Friday.

The extension doesn’t begin until the 2015-16 season though. Randolph is exercising his player option for the 2014-15 season that’s worth $16.5 million, according to Yahoo Sports. He had until Monday to exercise his option. If he hadn’t exercised it, then he would have become a free agent on July 1.

Randolph has been in the NBA for 13 seasons. He has been with the Grizzlies since 2009. In addition to the Grizzlies he has also played for the Portland Trail Blazer, New York Knicks, and the Los Angeles Clippers. In 13 seasons Randolph has career averages of 17.4 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists, according to the Associated Press. He had said that he wanted to play in Memphis for the rest of his career.

“It’s cool, man,” Randolph told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. “This is where I wanted to be.”

Randolph is a two-time All-Star. He averaged 17.5 points and 10.1 rebounds last season, according to ESPN. The Grizzlies won 50 games and made the playoffs last season. They lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round.

The Grizzlies now have to decide what to do with two other players. They have until Monday to give backup forward Ed Davis a $4.3 million qualifying offer that would make him a free agent. Backup center Kosta Koufos has a $3 million team option.
