Ben Kingsley joins Spike TV's King Tut miniseries

Ben Kingsley will star in Spike TV’s scripted miniseries about the Egyptian monarch King Tutankhamun.

Deadline reported that Kingsley will play Ay, the grand vizier to the titular pharaoh. The character reportedly holds huge influence over the young ruler.

Kingsley is most famous for his Oscar-winning performance in Gandhi, but he has had a prolific career, appearing in films like Schindler’s List and Hugo as well as more commercial fare like Prince of Persia and Iron Man 3.

This is Spike TV’s grand return to scripted drama after 2007’s The Kill Point, starring Donnie Wahlberg.

“Tut is the biggest and most ambitious project in Spike’s history,” Sharon Levy, Spike’s Executive President of Original Series, said.

The series is being created by Muse Entertainment, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The company is not new to the scripted miniseries, having brought The Kennedys and The Pillars of the Earth to the small screen.

The show will shoot in Canada and Morocco this fall and will aim for a 2015 premiere.
