Dallas Cowboys sign Tyron Smith to eight-year extension

The Dallas Cowboys and Pro Bowl offensive tackle Tyron Smith have agreed on an eight-year extension worth $98 million. The deal runs through 2023 and makes the total value of his contract worth almost $110 million.

Smith’s contract guarantees him $40 million along with a $10 million signing bonus according to ESPN. Smith had two years remaining on his contract before the extension.

Smith was selected with the ninth overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, the first offensive lineman taken by Dallas in the first round since 1981.

Smith is an athletic prototype left tackle that has protected Tony Romo’s blind side at left tackle for the past two seasons. In his three years with Dallas Smith has only missed one game. Despite the high risk of an eight-year contract, Smith won’t turn 24 until December and is a solid starter in the NFL.

Now that the Cowboys have locked up the left tackle for the future their focus will most certainly shift to signing Dez Bryant to a long-term deal. There is a lot of debate as to what Bryant’s worth actually is; it should be interesting to see how this contract affects the Cowboy’s discussions with Bryant.
