'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' dominates weekend box office with $73 million

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes had no trouble wrestling control of the weekend box office away from Transformers: Age of Extinction, while Richard Linklater's Boyhood was solid in only five movie theaters.

The 20th Century Fox film raked in $73 million during opening weekend, managing to just beat analysts' projections. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Andy Serkis-starring sequel has passed the $100 million mark worldwide already with $31.1 million in overseas grosses.

Dawn also performed quite well, with the domestic gross toppling Rise of the Planet of the Apes' $54.8 million haul.

The fourth Michael Bay Transformers film fell to second place with $16.3 million, Deadline reports. The Warner Bros.' comedy Tammy took third with $12.5 million.

22 Jump Street grossed $6.5 million, while How to Train Your Dragon 2 earned $6 million to round out the top five at the box office.

Boyhood, which took Linklater 12 years to film, is doing quite well for being open in only five theaters. The film earned $359,000, coming in just behind The Grand Budapest Hotel in best per-screen average for 2014 so far with $71,800.
