Deadpool test footage with Ryan Reynolds leaks, gets fans excited before Fox pulls it

Towards the end of Comic-Con, something bizarre happened that did not go unnoticed by comic book fans, especially those who love the Marvel mercenary character Deadpool. A movie about the character has been in development hell at Fox for years, but a short clip of test footage for one incarnation leaked. While the studio has since taken it down, we’re still contemplating about what might have been.

The footage lasted a few seconds shy of two minutes and featured a CG-animated Deadpool, wearing the familiar black and red outfit right from the comics. It also had actor Ryan Reynolds’ voice as Deadpool, along with a clip from Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” at the start. As Mashable points out, the “Merc with a Mouth” even talks directly to the audience, a style choice carried over from the comics.

In addition, the clip is just as violent as a Deadpool movie should be. There’s no way you could make a PG-13 Deadpool movie and please fans.

Blur Studios created the footage for 20th Century Fox at least two years ago. It is likely that the expense of making an R-rated comic book movie turned off Fox, since the character certainly isn’t as well-known as the X-Men.

Rob Liefeld, who created the character, did confirm on Twitter that it was a real test. In an interview with Daily SuperheroHype, he later credited director Tim Miller for the amazing work on the sequence. However, he declined to go into detail on why it the movie never happened.
