George Clooney rips Daily Mail in op/ed about 'irresponsibility' about story on fiance Amal Alamuddin's mother

George Clooney is used to his life being used as tabloid fodder, but he’s now taking a stance against an article published in The Daily Mail that involves his fiancé, Amal Alamuddin’s mother.

The article, which has now been taken down, claimed Alamuddin’s mother not did not approve of their impending marriage because of religious reasons.

“It says Amal's mother has been telling ‘half of Beirut’ that she’s against the wedding. It says they joke about traditions in the Druze religion that end up with the death of the bride. Let me repeat that: the death of the bride. First of all, none of the story is factually true,” he wrote in an op/ed for USA Today.

Clooney writes more than once that he doesn’t “care” that tabloids report on fictitious stories such as Alamuddin being pregnant or Clooney running for office, he cares about the “irresponsibility” in this case that involves exploiting religious beliefs.

“This lie involves larger issues. The irresponsibility, in this day and age, to exploit religious differences where none exist, is at the very least negligent and more appropriately dangerous,” he wrote.

On Wednesday, Daily Mail offered an apology to Clooney, The AP reports. They said the story had been "supplied in good faith by a reputable and trusted freelance journalist."
