Germany's blowout of Brazil at World Cup is most tweeted about sporting event

While the 2014 FIFA World Cup semi-finals match between Germany and Brazil was a complete disaster for the home team, the game was a boon for Twitter. The social media site said that it was the most tweeted about sporting event, surpassing the previous NFL Super Bowl.

After the game, Twitter posted several statistics to show how much the game dominated the network for the 90 minutes that it lasted. Although, some might think that the game only lasted under 30 minutes, since Germany had scored five goals by then.

Still, there were 35.6 million tweets sent out about the game, which used the hashtag #GERvsBRA. According to The Hollywood Reporter, that smashed the previous record held by the last Super Bowl, which had 24.9 million tweets.

Twitter said that Germany’s Miroslav Klose was the most mentioned German player, which shouldn’t be a surprise. He scored his 16th goal of the tournament in the game, breaking the record for most goals in a single World Cup tournament. The record was previously held by Brazil’s Ronaldo, who set it in 2002.

There were three incredible, record breaking Tweets-Per-Minute moments. There were over 497,000 tweets sent at the minute that Klose’s first goal made it 3-0. When he scored his second, it jumped to 508,600. When Germany’s Sami Khedira scored, over 580,000 tweets were sent at that minute.
