Google just got bigger, again. The internet giant just announced that it bought Songza, a music streaming service, which will help it compete with Apple, which recently bought a service of its own.
Google announced the purchase in a blog post, noting that the service will continue to work as current users are expected. At the moment, the company is hoping to integrate Songza into Google Play Music, Google’s own music store.
“…We’re thrilled to welcome Songza to Google,” Google said, praising Sonza for their playlist features. “They’ve built a great service which uses contextual expert-curated playlists to give you the right music at the right time.”
The news is not a complete surprise. Earlier this month, the New York Post first reported that Google was in talks to buy the company. Although it was reported that Google was offering $15 million for the service, today’s announcement offered no financial details.
Of course, if Google really did buy Songza for just $15 million, it is one heck of a deal. Apple spent $3 billion to buy Beats Music. Spotify, another streaming service has been valued at as much as $4 billion. Obviously, Songza is nowhere near as popular as those services, but Google is clearly hoping it can be soon.
