James Garner gets 10-film marathon on TCM

While James Garner is best known for his television roles on Maverick and The Rockford Files, the actor starred in countless films and even earned an Oscar nomination in his later career. To remember the star, Turner Classic Movies has announced a 10-film marathon that will take up its entire Monday schedule into next Tuesday.

The marathon begins with one of Garner’s early films, Toward the Unknown from 1956 at 6 a.m. Monday morning. That will be followed by Shoot-out at Medicine Bend.

Grand Prix, one of his more famous movie roles, will begin at 9:30 a.m. The film was directed by John Frankenheimer and co-stars Eva Marie Saint.

The next few films are some lesser-known titles, including Cash McCall, The Wheeler Dealers, Darby’s Rangers, Mister Buddwing and The Thrill of it All.

At 10 p.m. will be one of his most beloved films, The Americanization of Emily, which Garner called one of his favorites. The 1964 film pairs him with Julie Andrews.

That will be followed by William Wyler’s The Children’s Hour with Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine and Victor/Victoria with Andrews. The tribute ends with Marlowe at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Better get that DVR cleared if you haven’t seen any of these.

Garner died on Saturday at age 86. He is best known to younger audiences as the older version of Ryan Gosling’s character in The Notebook and earned an Oscar nomination for Murphy’s Romance (1985).
