Jon Lester remains on trade block

Every day there seems to be two storylines regarding the Boston Red Sox: how did the team do in its game and did ace Jon Lester get traded. With less than two days left before the 4 p.m. trade deadline on July 31, Lester is still a member of the Red Sox.
While management has been fielding offers for their star pitcher for weeks, manager John Farrell is still preparing to have Lester lead his rotation over the final two months of the season.
“Although there’s a lot of rumors, a lot of talk with his name attached to it, right now he’s scheduled to start tomorrow night,” Farrell said, according to ESPN Boston. “If Jon is traded by this time tomorrow, [Triple-A call-up] Brandon Workman will start.”
Farrell and Lester have been through an awful lot together. They first teamed up in 2007 (when Farrell was Boston’s pitching coach). The two have claimed two World Series championships together, which includes last year’s title run during which Lester went 5-1 with a 1.56 ERA. Farrell played a pivotal role in Lester’s return from to the mound from lymphoma, according to The Boston Globe.
The trade rumors surrounding Lester pinpoint four teams to be the frontrunners for his services. The Los Angeles Dodgers seem to be at the top of the list, but appear to be unwilling to ship their top prospects. The Pittsburgh Pirates, who could use a star pitcher, would be a good fit for Lester. The other two clubs at the top of the list are the Milwaukee Brewers and the Baltimore Orioles, reports CBS Sports.
Lester’s contract runs out at the end of the season. The Red Sox are in last place in the AL East with a record of 48-58.
