Lana Del Rey opens up about music, state of mind

Lana Del Rey isn’t a huge fan of interviews, though she has finally spoken about the reason behind her music as well as what may or may not be going through her head.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the Ultraviolence singer grudgingly spoke about her life and what drives her to make music. The 28-year-old spoke out for the first time after the Kurt Cobain controversy, when Cobain’s daughter reprimanded her for supposedly glamorizing suicide. A few months ago during a radio interview, Del Rey reportedly commented, “I wish I was dead already,” causing a stir in the media as a result.

As for what’s going through the singer’s head now, she said, "Well, I feel f*****g crazy. But I don’t think I am.” She amended, “People make me feel crazy.” In response to the media uproar regarding her suicidal remarks, she said, “I find that most people I meet figure I kind of want to kill myself anyway. So it comes up every time.” Her dark and at times self-destructive lyrics are to blame for the public’s morbid perception of the singer.

However, Del Rey maintains that her listeners shouldn’t overthink the meaning behind her songs. “I just don’t want them to hear it at all,” she said of some of the darker material. “I’m very selfish. I make everything for me, kind of.” And Del Rey isn’t just talking about writing her own haunting lyrics. “I mean, every little thing, down to the guitar and the drums.”

After all, the singer is making the music for herself. “It’s just for me,” she said. “I don’t want them to hear it and think about it. It’s none of their business!”

Lana Del Rey’s third album, Ultraviolence, is in stores now.
