'Lone Ranger' outfit sells at auction for $195,000

An outfit once worn by Clayton Moore while he made public appearances as the Lone Ranger sold at auction on Saturday in Texas for $195,000.

The light blue shirt, pants, cowboy hat, guns and belt, boots and red kerchief were worn by The Lone Ranger outfit between 1949 and 1957 managed to best pre-sale estimates by more than $40,000, Reuters reports.

The auction was held at the Waco auction house A & S Auction Co. and the Lone Ranger outfit went to an anonymous buyer.

The outfit went for nearly $100,000 more than it cost the previous owner, Bob Davis, who passed away, snagged it for in 1999. "He was a big fan of the Lone Ranger and watched the show when it originally ran," Davis' son Earl said. "He really wanted it so he got into a bidding war to buy it."

Collectors were expected to come from all over in a chance to snag the Lone Ranger's outfit, with one bidder arriving a day earlier from Nashville, as previously reported.

Bret Appleton flew in to Texas from Nashville, noting he was at the auction just for a chance at the outfit. "This is basically what I come for."
