President Obama: At least one American aboard shot down Malaysian flight

President Barack Obama said on Friday that at least one American was among those killed when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down over the Ukraine.

ABC News reported that the state department has said that U.S.-Dutch citizen, Quinn Lucas Schansman, was among the 298 victims aboard the plane.

President Obama said that the U.S. believes that the jetliner was shot down by surface-to-air missiles from an area in the Ukraine controlled by Russian-backed separatists.

"We know [Russian separatists] have received steady support from Russia, which includes heavy weapons and training ... and includes anti-aircraft weapons," the President said.

CNN noted that during his comments, Obama called the shooting down of the plane and loss of life an "outrage of unspeakable proportions."

The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200 was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur in a commonly used air route above eastern Ukraine when it was struck down on Thursday.

Pro-Russian rebels in the Ukraine have not claimed responsibility for downing the aircraft.
