Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano dies at 88

Alfredo Di Stefano, the star footballer for Real Madrid in the 1950s and 1960s, has died at the age of 88.

Real Madrid released a statement that said Stefano passed away today at 17:15 in Madrid.

They also said the president and board of director’s express their sympathy for his children, family and friends.

According to the AP, Stefano had a heart attack on Saturday and spent two days in a coma before passing away.

In his 11 year's with Real Madrid from 1953 to 1964, Stefano helped lead the club to five consecutive European Cups and eight Spanish league titles, while scoring 216 goals in 282 appearances for the team, according to the Telegraph.

He was voted the European player of the year twice, in 1957 and 1959. He also led the Spanish league in scoring five years in a row between 1953 and 1959.

Real Madrid named him an honory president in 2000 and later named their new training complex after him, according to Fox Sports.

He turned 88 on Friday.
