Running of the Bulls Festival kicks off in Pamplona,Spain

On Sunday the “chupinazo” rocket was launched in Pamplona, Spain to kick off the official festival of the running of the bulls. Over 200,000 locals gathered to watch the blast off of the rocket wearing red neckerchiefs: a festival tradition. This nine-day festival, filled with partying and bull runs, was made popular by Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises. As the main square is crowded with people, it doesn’t seem like this festival is about to die out and remains a wild celebration.

Despite headlines following the festival featuring all those who are injured, the event still attracts a crazy amount of locals. Wine plays a big role in Pamplona’s festivals, making it tradition to drink from traditional leather wine pouches before the start of the festival according to USA Today. While the festival started on Sunday, the bulls will not be released till 8 a.m. on Monday. Six monstrous bulls will be running 875 yards through the streets chasing over thousands of fearless adrenaline junkies. The 1,100 lbs animals are dangerous when one is sober; So imagine the danger when being chased after drinking all night says Fox News Latino.

While many people are injured each year for this festival, it doesn’t end well for the bulls either. After the running, the bulls will be challenged by matadors which will lead to their death. The festival will last till July 14.
