Scottish Open Day 1 recap: Rory McIlroy takes early first-round lead

Rory Mcllroy posted a course record 64 on the opening day of the 2014 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Royal Aberdeen to take an early first-round lead.

Mcllroy posted eight birdies and a bogey on the way to his seven-under par round. It was the fourth time this year he’s opened up a tournament with a round of at least seven under according to ABC.

“Anytime you can start a tournament with a score like that, you are very pleased, and it’s obviously something to build on for the next three days,” said Mcllroy.

Kristoffer Broberg and Ricardo Gonzelez are both one shot back of Mcllroy. The top 10 also includes impressive names like Luke Donald and Phil Mickelson. Mickelson shot a three-under par 68, and shot just one bogey. Mickelson is the defending champion and won this event a year ago at Castle Stuart, before winning the Open at Muirfeld.

“I was pleased with the way I putted,” said Mickelson, who has failed to post a top-10 finish on the PGA Tour.

Mickelson had an amazing shot off the cart path to set up a birdie putt:
