'20/20' anchor Elizabeth Vargas checks into rehab for third time, ABC stands behind her

ABC News anchor, Elizabeth Vargas, has checked into rehab for alcohol addiction for the third time. The 20/20 co-anchor was on vacation in California when she checked back into an inpatient facility.

“While on vacation this weekend, I decided to return to a recovery center. As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process,” she said in a statement.

"I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry,” she continued, Daily News reports. “I am committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease and want to thank everyone who has offered their unwavering support during this trying time."

ABC said they support Vargas’ decision to seek help again and looks forward to welcoming her back when “she’s ready.”

Last January, Vargas sat down for an extensive interview with Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos about rehab and coming to terms with being an alcoholic. During the chat, she admitted it was “exhausting” trying to hide her dependency to alcohol.

Vargas is also going through a divorce from her husband of 12 years, Marc Cohen, whom she shares two children with.
