Ben Affleck threatens to become a Yankees fan because Red Sox can't win on his birthday

Boston Red Sox fans are an obsessive bunch and know statistics, but this one may have been missed. For some inexplicable reason, the Red Sox have not won on Ben Affleck’s birthday - Aug. 15 - since 1997, when Good Will Hunting came out. That curse stayed alive this Friday when the Houston Astros beat the Sox at Fenway.

Affleck took to Twitter and said that if the Sox didn’t win on Friday, he would switch allegiances to the Evil Empire, the New York Yankees. “If the @RedSox lose today, I'm going to have to start cheering for the @Yankees on Aug 15th. #BirthdayJinx,” Affleck wrote.

While Friday’s game got off to a good start for the Sox, things eventually fell apart, just like everything else has this season. As Deadpsin notes, the Astros tied the game up in the later innings and ended up winning with a two-run double in the top of the 10th.

NESN points out that the last time the Sox won on Aug. 15 was in 1997, when Reggie Jefferson helped the team beat the Minnesota Twins in extras. No one who played for the Sox that day is still in the MLB.

Despite the loss, Affleck has decided not to really switch sides. He couldn’t betray his beloved Boston. He later tweeted that he’s happy he wasn’t born in October.

Of course, the Red Sox won’t have to worry about October this year, unfortunately. They are 14.5 games out of first place in the AL East.
