Chris Pratt almost didn't take 'Guardians of the Galaxy' part: 'I didn't want to embarrass myself'

After an actor gets his or her first big taste of success, there usually is a quote about how the star almost didn’t take a role. You can add Chris Pratt to that list of actors who have said that, since he admitted that he almost didn’t agree to star in Guardians of the Galaxy, the number one movie in the country.

In a new interview with Esquire, the actor - who went from loveable Andy in NBC’s little-watched Parks and Recreation to big action hero Star-Lord in Guardians - said he didn’t see himself in the role of Star-Lord. He was really afraid of embarrassing himself.

When he was first pitched the part, he said, “I don't think so.” Pratt recalled, “I just didn't picture myself getting the role. I didn't want to go and embarrass myself like I did when I auditioned for G.I. Joe a couple of years previously.”

Pratt said that he was out of shape when he tired out for G.I. Joe. “I was not gonna play someone from G.I. Joe,” he told the magazine. “I did not look like a G.I. Joe action figure come to life.”

Pratt told Esquire that he is really happy to be in shape now. “I like clothes now. I have more energy. I sleep better. My sex drive is up. Blood's flowing. I'm less susceptible to impulse. I'm in a different mode,” he said.

Guardians is now the top film in the country and in the world. The Marvel movie broke the record for the best August debut, earning $94.3 million at the box office. You can check out our review here.
