Detroit homeowner who shot Renisha McBride on porch found guilty of murder

A jury found a Detroit area homeowner guilty of murder over the shooting of Renisha McBride while she was on his porch.

They came back on the second day of jury deliberations and found Dearborn Heights resident Theodore Wafer guilty of second-degree murder, manslaughter and felony firearm, the Detroit Free Press reports.

The 55-year-old fatally shot the 19-year-old when she was on his porch early in the morning on Nov. 2 and his legal team claimed he only opened fire in self-defense.

She came banging on his door at 4:30 a.m. in the morning and he shot her out of "total reflex reaction, defending myself... I wasn't going to cower in my house, I didn't want to be a victim," he testified, according to the Los Angeles Times.

State law says Wafer is allowed to defend himself with deadly force provided he "honestly and reasonably believe[d]" she was breaking into his residence.

McBride merely came to his house after crashing her car and prosecutor Patrick Muscat argued she was "injured, disoriented, just wanted to go home."

Wafer's sentence will be handed out Aug. 21, ABC News notes. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison with parole.
