Detroit Red Wings sign GM Ken Holland to new deal

Detroit Red Wings executive vice president and general manager Ken Holland signed a new four-year contract with the team on Thursday. He is now signed through the 2017-28 season.

Holland has been the Red Wings general manager for the last 17 years. During that time the Red Wings have won more regular-season games(746) and postseason games(115) than any other team, and won three Stanley Cup championships(1998, 2002, 2008), according to NHL.com. They have made the playoffs in each of the last 17 seasons. The Red Wings have won the Presidents’ Trophy four times and won ten division titles under Holland.

"I've been here a long time and very proud, very happy to be a Red Wing," Holland told the Detroit Free Press. "I work for, I believe, the best owners in the NHL; passionate, committed. It's nice to know that ownership has confidence in me to continue to lead going forward."

He went on to add that his goals are to compete with the top teams in the East and to continue to be a playoff contender. Another one of his goals is to sign young players. One of the young players that he would like to sign is restricted free-agent defenseman Danny DeKeyser. Holland also wants to give coach Mike Babcock a new contract. The Red Wings has a good year last year. They had to deal with a lot of injuries but they still made the playoffs for the 23rd consecutive season, according to the Associated Press. They lost to the Boston Bruins in the first round of the playoffs.

Holland has been with the Red Wings for the last 31 years. He played for the Red Wings and was a scout for them before he got into management.
