ESPN apologizes for report on Michael Sam’s showering habits

On Wednesday, ESPN apologized for a report the sports network did on the showering habits of St. Louis Rams defensive end Michael Sam.

USA Today Sports noted that on Tuesday, ESPN’s Josina Anderson did a report from Rams camp in which she said that players discussed the topic of the NFL hopeful’s showering habits.

During the SportsCenter report, Anderson said that one unnamed player believed that “Sam is kind of waiting to take a shower, as not to make his teammates feel uncomfortable.”

After the update from Earth City, Missouri aired, the company received complaints about the nature of the piece.

The following day PFT reported that ESPN issued an apology.

In a statement posted on its media relations website the network said, “ESPN regrets the manner in which we presented our report. Clearly on Tuesday we collectively failed to meet the standards we have set in reporting on LGBT-related topics in sports.”

Sam, a former defensive end at the University of Missouri, made headlines when he came out as gay a few months before the 2014 draft. He was selected 249th overall by the Rams and survived the team’s roster cut on Tuesday.
