'Ghostbusters 3' could be female-centric with Paul Feig directing: How did we get to that point?

Ghostbusters 3 has been in the works for ages and now it appears after countless dead ends, we are going to get a female-centric Ghostbusters. Sony is reportedly looking at Paul Feig as a potential director, since he is best known for blockbuster female-centric comedies.

How did we get to this point? How are we now at a point where Sony’s only viable way of rebooting this franchise is to go with the hot director who knows how to make the public laugh?

Ghostbusters 3’s life in a perpetual development hell has been well documented, but the engines really started running again back in July 2012, when Etan Cohen, who gave us Men in Black 3, was tapped to write. It was even scheduled to start shooting in March 2013, but that didn’t happen. The production date was pushed to this fall, which obviously isn’t going to happen unless a Hollywood miracle occurs.

One thing was clear from the start, though. Since it has been 25 years since Ghostbusters II, there could be a new generation of Ghostbusters, with Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd and (if he showed up) Bill Murray making cameos.

Sadly though, Ramis died earlier this year, which changed everything. The script (which Max Landis is NOT working on) was going to have to be tweaked. Then, director Ivan Reitman stepped down. Reitman had been the one constant on the project, but with him gone, Sony is back at square one.

Sony reportedly tried to get 21 Jump Street filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, but they turned them down. Now, we have this weekend’s news that Feig is in the running. TheWrap later confirmed that it will be all-female.

Feig is a relatively safe choice, since Bridesmaids and The Heat were box office smash hits. He knows how to write comedies and did a good job at directing Bridesmaids. The Heat didn’t impress critics, but audiences loved it.

While Feig getting the job isn’t a shocker by any means, the switch to an all-female Ghostbusters unit is a bit strange. Hollywood constantly gets criticized for a lack of female presence in action movies, but that’s not really the case with comedies and there’s no reason to go all-women here. There also shouldn’t be anything wrong with a multi-gender group of Ghostbusters. Last we checked, it’s 2014 and men and women work together every day. If we have women police officers, we can have women Ghostbusters too.

Anyway, there’s still no release date for Ghostbusters 3, but at least we’ll get to see the original on the big screen again soon.
