'If I Stay' tops Friday box office with $6.8 million, 'Sin City 2' flops

Chloe Grace Moretz's latest film If I Stay started off solid at the box office on Friday, while Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is dead on arrival.

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema's If I Stay took the top spot at the box office on Friday with $6.8 million, with $1.1 million from Thursday night previews. That's not exactly a strong start and likely won't be good enough for the film to top the weekend box office. Forbes notes the Chloe Grace Moretz starring film is projected to earn nearly $17 million for the weekend, which will be good enough for a top three finish.

Sin City 2, returning a long time after the original hit theaters back in 2005, was dead with moviegoers before getting out of the gate and will surely finish out of the top 5. The Robert Rodriguez film earned $2.62 million on Friday and will be likely to earn $7 million for the weekend.

The last new release film of the weekend, the faith-based When the Game Stands Tall grossed $3 million, managing to beat out Sin City and will likely earn $10 million on the weekend, which isn't spectacular, but the film only cost $15 million to make.

On a weekend with weak offerings, holdovers will likely take the top two spots at the box office. Guardians of the Galaxy, which grossed $4.83 million on Friday is projected to reclaim the no. 1 spot with a projected $18 million weekend, Deadline reports, which is pretty good for the fourth weekend.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was right behind with $4.5 million and is projected to earn $16 million on the weekend, putting it up against If I Stay for the second spot. R-rated comedy Let's Be Cops grossed $4 million and is projected to earn $11 million, which likely will be good enough for the fourth spot.

Last weekend's new releases The Expendables 3 and The Giver were forgettable at the box office, on Friday, beat out by the bombing Sin City.
