MTV VMAs give odd 23-second tribute to Robin Williams

The MTV Video Music Awards provided for a wild night on Sunday filled with wardrobe malfunctions, celebrity drama, memorable performances and calls for charity. However, one thing the live award show was short on was a substantial tribute to the late Robin Williams.

According to Us Weekly, the show featured an awkwardly short slideshow of photos of Williams. The piece was not introduced and began seconds after the Artist to Watch award was presented. No host or presenter stepped onstage to give a few heartfelt words about the late Oscar-winning comedian before or after the slideshow played. Not only was there a lack of respectful tribute to Williams, but the piece also transitioned abruptly into a commercial break.

A tribute is supposed to a kind way to reflect upon a person’s life, though the attempt presented by MTV looked as if an intern slapped some photos together five minutes prior to airtime. The slideshow featured Coldplay’s “A Sky Full of Stars.” The piece was not even thirty seconds long and made for an awkward way to celebrate the life of a highly influential public figure.

Meanwhile, Williams will reportedly receive an “appropriate and meaningful” tribute at the Emmys tomorrow.
