Rafael Nadal pulls out of US Open over wrist injury

The latest name to drop out of the upcoming US Open is Rafael Nadal who withdrew on Monday due to a wrist injury.

The Spaniard made the announcement on his Facebook, just as the Open revealed his withdrawal, The Associated Press reports. He previously had hoped to be ready in time for the Open after injuring the wrist during practice on July 29.

"I am sure you understand that it is a very tough moment for me since it is a tournament I love and where I have great memories from fans," the translated post said. "Not much more I can do right now, other than accept the situation."

The 28-year-old will only be the fourth men's champion, behind Ken Rosewall, Pete Sampras and Juan Martin del Potro, to miss the US Open.

Chinese tennis star Li Na announced in late July she would not compete after suffering a knee injury back in March. She revealed that she was pulling out following advice from her medical team. Li also dropped out of two upcoming Women's Tennis Association tournaments.
