Rams DE Michael Sam gets one last chance to impress

For the St. Louis Rams, their worst nightmare became a reality as franchise QB Sam Bradford was lost for the season with a torn ACL, yet again. No worries though, as DE Michael Sam should keep the Rams’ news coming. Sam is expected to receive a very heavy workload in the Rams final preseason game tonight against the Miami Dolphins.

For the lightning rod that is Sam, he has surprisingly not been much of a focus in the NFL headlines this August. This game though will be the last determining factor on whether Sam will make the team’s 53-man-roster, according to CBSSports.com.

The seventh-round pick from Missouri has shown some flashes thus far. Actually, his stat line for the preseason is rather impressive with three sacks and five total tackles. Two of these sacks came in their last game against Johnny Manziel and the Cleveland Browns. Sam, fitting right into the NFL stage, flashed Manziel’s signature “money sign” immediately after the take-down.

"With the plays you have, you’ve got to make sure you perform," Sam commented after the game. "I thought I came up big in the fourth quarter,” according to ESPN.com.

What remains to be seen is whether Sam can beat out the competition on the roster. Undrafted free-agent rookie Ethan Brooks has also played just as well as Sam this preseason. Because the Rams seem to have eight defensive lineman spots already locked in, the question will be whether they’ll carry a ninth-spot or not.

One thing is for sure as it relates to determining Sam’s fate in St. Louis: Rams head coach Jeff Fisher is the right man for this job.
