Scrabble game adds new words to player’s dictionary

Good news Scrabble fans … plenty of new words will be added to the game’s player’s dictionary this month.

According to TIME, more than 5,000 new words will be included in the Fifth Edition of The Official SCRABBLE Player’s Dictionary.

The Associated Press noted that some of the new words in the dictionary will be texter, bromance, frenemy, hashtag and of course selfie.

Lots of two letter words, which are essential to a Scrabble player’s strategy, will also be added including te, da, gi and po.

The OSPD was first published in 1978 through the efforts of the National Scrabble Association Dictionary Committee and Merriam-Webster. It was developed for use in the game by speakers of American and Canadian English.

The new entries give the dictionary about 40 extra pages. The revised versions will go on sale Aug. 11 and updated apps will be available later in the month. However, the words will not be permitted for tournament use until December.
