Simon Cowell producing Betty Boop movie, will mark character's first appearance in 25 years

Betty Boop is a character that’s sadly only kept alive today through animation fans and appearances on clothing and merchandise. However, that could change, thanks to music mogul Simon Cowell, surprisingly.

On Thursday, Cowell’s Syco Entertainment and Animal Logic Entertainment announced plans to develop the first ever feature length film featuring the character. The two studios will work with Fleischer Studios, which brought the character to life in 1930.

Although Betty hasn’t been in a movie since Who Framed Roger Rabbit in 1988, over 25 years ago, the character remains a beloved symbol of American pop culture, even if her cartoons aren’t as widely seen. King Features handles licensing and has allowed companies from Coca-Cola to Lancome to use Betty for advertising and merchandising.

Animal Logic’s Zareh Nalbandian and Jason Lust will produce with Syco’s Cowell and Adam Milano.

“Betty is an icon, and one of the biggest stars in the world – I'm thrilled to be working with her,” Cowell said in a statement, notes EW. “Betty, I've worked with some serious divas but I think you could be the biggest of them all!”

“I'm so excited to return to the big screen – and I only work with the best! Let's have some fun, Simon,” Betty said. “Boop-Oop-a-Doop!"

Today’s news didn’t include any potential release date or who would voice Betty in the film. It’s also not clear if this will be an animation/live-action hybrid. But whatever the case may be, it will certainly be nice to hear “Boop-Oop-a-Doop” again.
