Universal to release Clifford the Big Red Dog movie in 2016

Clifford the Big Red Dog looked huge in picture books and on television, but imagine how big he will look on the big screen or even in IMAX. Universal is making those dreams happen, but you will have to wait until 2016.

The studio announced today that a Clifford the Big Red Dog movie will be coming out on April 8, 2016, reports Variety. At the moment, the film has that weekend all by itself, but the Best Man follow-up The Best Man Wedding is coming out the following week. (Not that Universal will care, since that’s a Universal release, too.)

Clifford debuted in 1963 and was created by Norman Bridwell. The red dog began life as a tiny puppy, but grew to be as big as a fire station. His owner, Emily Elizabeth, has remained by his side through 60 books.

Little is known about Universal’s plan for the film version. It is expected to be a live-action/animation 3D hybrid and Scholastic Media’s Deborah Forte is producing. Matt Lopez (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) is co-producing, notes Deadline. Other than that, there are no writers or directors attached and certainly no news on talent at this point.
