USC DB Josh Shaw injures ankles saving nephew from drowning

University of Southern California defensive back Josh Shaw injured both of his ankles while saving his nephew from drowning at an apartment complex in Los Angeles.

Shaw was at a family party when he noticed his 7-year old nephew in the pool struggling to stay afloat. Shaw jumped off a second floor balcony and landed feet first on the concrete, spraining both ankles. He the crawled into the pool and saved the nephew, according to USC’s Ripsit blog.

Earlier in the day, Shaw was named a captain of the football team after starting all 14 games and intercepting four passes last season, according to ESPN.

USC head coach Steve Sarkisian told the Ripsit blog that he was not surprised when he heard what Shaw at done to save his nephew.

“That was a heroic act by Josh, putting his personal safety aside. But that’s the kind of person he is. It is unfortunate that he’ll be sidelined for a while and we will miss his leadership and play, but I know he’ll be working hard to get back on the field as soon as possible.”

Shaw will be out indefinitely after being diagnosed with two high ankle sprains, but he said he would do it again for any kid, even if he were not related to him.

USC’s first game of the year is on Saturday against Fresno State.
