Did you know that Zoe Saldana and Britney Spears made a movie together? Well, we were reminded of that fact when Saldana came to the defense of her Crossroads co-star during Thursday’s episode of Watch What Happens Live.
Saldana, who appears in the box office champion Guardians of the Galaxy, was asked by a fan about Spears, who was recently at the center of an autotune controversy when an autotune-free version of “Alien” leaked. As Us Weekly notes, Saldana came right to Spears’ defense.
“I’m pretty sure that 80 percent of our musical artists would be mortified if they were caught singing without auto-tune,” Saldana said, adding that it is “mean” to criticize how Spears’ un-produced voice sounds.
“I have a huge amount of respect for Britney Spears,” she continued. “And I’ve always said this, and I will always continue to say it: She was the one big, big celebrity that I met when I was starting to work in Hollywood who was humble, and whatever was going on in her mind or in her world, it was never about hating her neighbor.”
Saldana noted that Spears never really criticized other celebrities, unlike those who made careers out of hating on Spears. She praised Spears for her “good energy.”
Saldana and Spears made Crossroads together back in 2002, long before Saldana shot to fame in 2009’s Avatar and Star Trek. The film was a flop and widely panned, but has a few other big names in the credits, including writer Shonda Rhimes, who went on to create Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy.
Guardians of the Galaxy grossed $94 million this weekend and you can read our review here.
