Detroit Pistons’ Greg Monroe signs qualifying offer, to become unrestricted free agent in 2015 (Report)

Detroit Pistons center-forward Greg Monroe reportedly signed a one-year qualifying offer with the team, setting him up to become an unrestricted free agent in 2015.

According to Yahoo! Sports, league sources said that Monroe signed the more than $5 million offer on Friday.

Monroe will play with the Pistons in the upcoming season, before becoming a free agent next summer and the team cannot trade him without his consent.

The Pistons selected the big man with the seventh pick in 2010 draft and while he has been a consistent scorer, he has reportedly wanted out of Detroit for some time.

The Sporting News reported that despite efforts by the Pistons’ front office, including a $50 million offer, the team wasn’t able to get anything done with Monroe.

The 24-year-old averaged 15.2 points and 9.3 rebounds last season and was a bright spot for the team. Now, it looks as though he could be headed elsewhere unless the Pistons do well next season and can entice him to stay.
