Ellen Pompeo suggests she might leave acting after 'Grey's Anatomy'

After playing one character for nearly a decade, Ellen Pompeo suggested that she might just hang up her acting skills for good and isn’t interested in playing anyone else.

Pompeo has played Dr. Meredith Grey on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy since 2005 and is returning to the hospital again this fall. She sat down, along with Viola Davis and Kerry Washington, for BuzzFeed Brews on Wednesday when she spoke about her craft.

“I definitely don’t have a strong desire to act after Grey’s,” Pompeo, 44, told the audience and Facebook users who saw the interview streamed live. “I feel myself transitioning. I don’t find acting terribly empowering. For the place I am in my life … I don’t necessarily want to work for other people.”

Washington, who also stars in a show created by Shonda Rhimes, Scandal, sounded a bit surprised to hear that. “Wow. That’s a great statement,” she said.

Pompeo continued, “With acting, I don’t feel I have anything to prove anymore.” She said that she would like to challenge herself in a “new sport” and see what else she can do.

However, she isn’t completely done with Hollywood. She has launched a production company called Calamity Jane. Pompeo also joked that no one should say she’s 100 percent retiring.

“...I try to keep an open heart and open mind and open soul and spirit to whatever comes my way, and whatever is meant to be for me will be,” she said.

Pompeo and her co-star, Patrick Dempsey, signed on for two more seasons of Grey’s, which will cover the upcoming 11th season and next year’s season 12.

Grey’s returns on Sept. 25 on ABC.
