Flow Tribe's 'Alligator White' EP Review

The funky six-piece New Orleans band, Flow Tribe, describes their sound as “backbone cracking music.” With their latest EP, Alligator White set to release on September 9, Flow Tribe offers no shortage of groovy, high-powered music that you can’t help but dance to!

Flow Tribe’s music is hard to place- it’s definitely of its own breed. Bringing together the diversity of all of the music found within their hometown of New Orleans, Flow Tribe’s music is loud, hard-hitting, and filled with fun, jumping lyrics that could get anyone up out of their seat. The band combines sounds from jazz, funk, blues, and a little latin flair, pairs it with soulful vocals, and delivers their music flawlessly. Each song on the five-track EP has “that something” - whether it be a memorable line, the booming combination of instruments, or vocalist/trumpeter, K.C. O’Rorke’s smooth voice- there’s something to love about every song on “Alligator White.”

One of my favorite songs would be “Back N Forth.” I love the smooth guitar in the background, and the beat of the song, and I really like the way that the song just flows into the chorus that features some distinct hip-hop and rock influences. Another song that has a lot more of a distinct rock sound is the last track, “Won’t Be Long,” although Flow Tribe’s distinct New Orleans twang is still interlaced throughout the song.

I found myself dancing along to each song, and comparing Flow Tribe to many different bands. I think the more interesting comparisons I found were to bands like the Dave Matthews Band, ska bands like The Mighty Mighty Boss Tones (particularly on the third track, “Ooh Yea”), and artist Jamiroquai. Another band that they remind me a lot of is Dumpstaphunk, another psychedelic funk band from New Orleans. There are just so many sounds in Flow Tribe’s music, that my ear couldn’t quite settle on just one single band, artist, or even genre to compare them to!

One thing’s certain- Flow Tribe’s music is fun, upbeat, danceable, and the six-piece band are definitely funky, groovy, and soulful musicians.
