'NCIS' recap- 'The San Dominick'

The episode begins with Ellie on a ship. She is taking part in a training mission with Gibbs and DiNozzo, who are acting as the bad guys she has to catch. However, while she does everything she is supposed to, Tony catches her. Gibbs doesn’t say a word to her and Tony calls it silent encouragement. Ellie meets Abigail Borin before Tony tells her that doing well in this type of training involves the hearts, ears, and eyes. Meanwhile, Gibbs is looking out at the water with Borin when he spots a man overboard.

The body is I.D.’d as Joe Willis, who is a crewmember from the San Dominick, not from U.S.S. Serano. San Dominick is a cargo ship and they are not responding to radio calls. Their location puts them as heading south and not Spain, which is where their transportation point is. Gibbs sends Bishop back to NCIS while he goes to the San Dominick with a fellow Petty Officer.

McGee and Bishop are in the squad room. They talk about the victim, who is is Joseph Willis. He was an armed guard on cargo ship. Tim asks how she failed and Ellie tells him she did everything right but doesn’t know what happened. Tim tells her the training exercise is likened to a scenario from Star Trek called Kobayashi Maru, which is where you never win. He didn’t pass and neither did Tony, only Gibbs passed.

Gibbs and Borin on ship where they meet James Meyer, the first mate, who appears nervous. They ask to talk to Captain O’Rourke. He also appears nervous as well and when Gibbs asks to see a manifest for the crew, the captain begins to look unwell. Gibbs realizes he has been stabbed.

Ducky and Bishop are in the autopsy and he tells her the victim was knifed while fending off an attack. They also discover he drowned from potable water on the cargo ship, not in the ocean. Then, after discovering a condition that would have prevented him from joining the armed services, Ducky realizes the dead man is not Joe Willis.

Meyer asks if captain will be okay after he has been taken to the Serano with Tony. They discover blood in one of the rooms, as though a fight occurred. Gibbs writes number he finds on a piece of paper and Gibbs asks to talk to Meyer alone, since another man named Renaldo Aranda has been sticking close to Meyer.

Borin and Tony are discussing the case when they find out security guard not who they think he is. Abby calls and tells them he is Ernesto Vilandro, a Venezuelan man wanted for piracy. He is associated with the engineer on the San Dominick, who is Renaldo. Tony gets on the walkie-talkie to Gibbs as Renaldo comes in holding the petty officer hostage.

Borin and Tony are on the video intercom with McGee and Tony. Vilandro impersonated Willis, who was last seen ten days earlier in Norfolk. Vilandro had taken a ship hostage two years prior and held Captain O’Rourke hostage, who didn’t bother to say anything. Tony puts McGee in charge since neither Tony nor Gibbs are there. Ellie calls him boss.

Tony is on the USS serano on his walkie-talkie trying to get through to the San Dominick. Gibbs and Meyer are trying to talk about how many pirates there are, but Renaldo keeps shushing them. Petty Officer Patricia Felton is bleeding from a head wound. Gibbs helps her even when Renaldo takes her compression away. He asks Borin on the walkie-talkie for $10 million in cash. They have 59 minutes to get the money.

McGee and Ellie are at Willis’ apartment. She is still calling Tim boss, who asks her to stop. They go inside to see place ransacked and a bottle of urine is sitting by a laptop. Willis has falsified id’s in his apartment. McGee opens the bathroom door only to find a body in the bathtub.

The captain is taken to the Serano and Tony questions him. O’Rourke tells him he tried to stop Vilandro after he had been told to cut off the radio line. He asks Tony for some chewing tobacco, but his is in the evidence bag. He is going to be taking a Medivac to Norfolk. Borin is doing her best to go with her plan of keeping Aranda stalled and happy. She offers Aranda a getaway boat, but he doesn’t want a boat. Tony tries to calm him but Aranda gets violent and holds a gun to Patricia. Gibbs gets in front of gun.

Tony is talking to Aranda while Borin talks on her com. Aranda is leading Gibbs down a hall. Tony and Borin hear gunfire, but don’t hear anything until Gibbs comes on intercom. Aranda is shot in the leg.

Ducky and McGee are in autopsy where Ducky reveals Willis died of asphyxiation. He has been dead for around seven days. The killers used dead animal deodorizer to try and preserve body. While in the room, Ducky is amused to see that McGee is taking on qualities that Gibbs has, such as carrying a coffee cup and calling him Duck.

Gibbs puts a tourniquet on Aranda’s leg. One of the pirates is talking over the walkie talkie, trying to get Aranda’s attention. Gibbs tells Aranda to respond to the guy on intercom that he’s fine. Aranda reveals Vilandro was the leader. Gibbs asks who the sixth person was but Aranda refuses to say. There is a shipping container on deck four that was supposed to be protected.

Bishop and Abby are in the lab going over the information from the laptop. It computer filled with information on plans to take over the cargo ship and as they talk, McGee comes in. Abby is running DNA samples on food from the trash to get profiles. McGee continues to do things that remind us of Gibbs, such as giving Abby a Caf Pow. Abby gets chills from McGee’s behavior, and begins calling him McGibbs. McGee is shocked, as he doesn’t know what she’s talking about. They tease him about channeling Gibbs and he tells them to stop. Abby replies, “You got it…boss.”

Tony goes to Borin and says MSRT is ready and Borin reveals they got id’s on the pirates involved. They were all arrested for petty thefts. They realize they are missing something and prepare to head to the boat.

McGee is in the office answering all the ringing phones. He gets Ellie’s attention, who had pinpointed origin of emails form the laptop. They all came from Norfolk. Abby comes in and tells them she found out the numbers Gibbs gave them were for a shipping container’s locator number. LCD Liquidated owns the container, a company investigated for drug money smuggling. McGee begins speaking and inadvertently makes up rule 70, leaving Abby shocked. She tells him she doesn’t recognize him.

Aranda and Gibbs go to mess hall and when the second pirate comes to Aranda’s aid, he is placed under arrest. The other hostages are there, but the other pirates take Patricia. Gibbs takes Aranda with him down to the shipping container. After Tony comes on the walkie-talkie to let them know they have the other pirates, Gibbs discovers the container is a bomb. Patricia is also there as a hostage. Aranda tells Gibbs the bomb doesn’t belong to them.

Gibbs tells them to turn off the bomb, but they don’t know whose it is. It appears they don’t know anything about the bomb. Tony and Borin arrive and Aranda tells them they were expecting a boat after Tony tells them McGee had said the container was supposed to have drug money inside.

Aranda only knows about the money and leaving by boat. However, Borin reveals that plans found on the computer did not say anything about a boat. The pirates had been set up. Aranda tells the pirate to let Patricia go. He does and Gibbs arrests him just as the bomb goes to zero, however it doesn’t go off. Gibbs had removed the wire when he first saw the bomb. Borin slaps him and they realize that someone took the drug money off the ship.

Tony says something about not having a diaper before he discovers chewed up tobacco near the area where the bomb was.

Tony goes to talk to O’Rourke and Borin shows up, telling him it was clever that he staged a hijacking so he could rob money from cartels. Borin and Tony make the arrest. Tony reveals there is security footage of him buying dead animal deodorizer that was used on Willis’ body. O’Rourke says Vilandro thought they were going into business together. He had never kept the money on the ship and Vilandro figured out he was planning on killing him.

Tony and Borin are in office finishing up the case. She tells him he could be her number three one day. In the squad room, Tony congratulations Tim on doing well and then Ellie comes to tell them she figured out Gibbs had fixed the test so he could pass and she’d ask him. However, Tony reminds her that she can keep some ideas in her head as they leave the room. As everyone heads out for the night, McGee decides to sits at Gibbs’ desk. However, he turns around with a terrified look to see his boss. Gibbs merely looks at Tim before saying, “Really? Rule 70, McGee?”
