Slipknot takes top spot on Billboard, beats T.I. and Neil Diamond

While Slipknot’s reign at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart will probably be short-lived, their new release is king at least for a few days. The album broke country music’s three-week streak and beat new releases from T.I. and Neil Diamond.

.5: The Gray Chapter is Slipknot’s second No. 1 album and sold 132,000 copies during the week that ended on Oct. 26, according to Nielsen SoundScan data provided to Billboard. It is their first studio album since All Hope Is Gone came out in 2008 and debuted at the top with 240,000 copies sold.

T.I.’s new album, Paperwork did better than expected, selling 80,000 copies. While debuting in the same spot as his last album, 2013’s Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head, it did sell significantly less than that release. Trouble Man sold 179,000 copies during its first week, which was timed with the holiday season.

Diamond is back where he belongs - on the music charts. The legendary singer’s Melody Road became his 18th Top 10 album with 78,000 copies sold. That’s a huge jump from 2010’s< i>Dreams, which started at No. 8 with 35,000 copies.

Rapper Logic’s Under Pressure started at No. 4 with 73,000 copies. Florida Georgia Line’s Anything Goes, which topped the chart last week, rounded out the Top 5 with 59,000 copies sold in its second week.

The rest of the Top 10 features Jason Aldean’s Old Boots, New Dirt (56,000); Little Big Town’s new Pain Killer (42,000); Partners from Barbra Streisand (40,000); Pentatonix’s new That’s Christmas To Me (32,000); and Annie Lennox’s Nostalgia (32,000).

Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass” only sold 143,000 downloads, but that was enough to top the Digital Songs Chart.

Next week’s album chart will be completely shaken up, since Taylor Swift’s 1989 will likely debut at the top. Billboard has predicted that it will likely sell 1 million copies this week.
