The Unbound' by Victoria Schwab review

In this exciting sequel to The Archived, Victoria Schwab once again creates a magical, but believable coexistence between our world and the supernatural world of the dead. In the previous book, the main character Mackenzie had the job of protecting the memories or “histories” of those who had passed away, and keep them from escaping. However, someone was causing chaos at the Archive, by erasing the histories.

After discovering and defeating the culprit, The Unbound, begins with Mackenzie complaining of a lack of sleep. It has been three weeks since she was able to banish the evil history into a void, the one that tried to destroy the Archive and kill her and Wesley. She can’t quite shake the memory of him, and her nightmares have made it almost impossible for her to sleep. On her first day at Hyde High School, she meets some old acquaintances of Wesley's. Then, one by one, they mysteriously go missing.

Mackenzie must find out why these people are missing, and to make everything worse for her, the evil history that she banished manages to show up. He somehow made it out of a void located at Hyde. This time, he wants Mackenzie to team up with him to take down the Archive, branch by branch. Now she has to get rid of him permanently and get out of the trouble into which she has planted herself!

Although The Unbound is on par with The Archived, my now 6th grader has only granted it 4 ½ stars, rather than 5. The Unbound is still an excellent read for the young adult audience, and appears to be only the second book in a trilogy. Author Victoria Schwab indicated, on her Tumblr page that she already has it outlined, she just isn’t sure when it will be completed. We will be anxiously awaiting its publication!
