Alfonso Soriano retires from baseball after 16 seasons

Two-time World Series Champion Alfonso Soriano has announced that he is calling it a career and retiring from Major League Baseball after 16 seasons.

The Associated Press noted that Soriano said he was hanging up his cleats during a radio interview on Tuesday in his native Dominican Republic.

"I've lost the love and passion to play the game," he said. "Right now, my family is the most important thing.

"Although I consider myself in great shape, my mind is not focused on baseball," Soriano added.

The 38-year-old played for four teams in his career including brief stays with the Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals, seven seasons with the Chicago Cubs and two stints with the New York Yankees.

Soriano is a seven-time All-Star and recipient of four Silver Slugger Awards. He ends his career after playing in 1,975 games in which he compiled 2,095 hits, 1,159 RBIs and a .270 batting average, according to Baseball-Reference.com.

He also had 412 home runs and ranks 50th on the all-time list.
