Fiery crash kills one, shuts down New Jersey turnpike for hours

A crash on the New Jersey Turnpike claimed the life of one person and shut down the highway for more than 10 hours as cleanup lasted into the following morning.

According to 6ABC, the deadly crash happened around 9 p.m. Tuesday in Cranbury Township. All the northbound lanes were immediately shut down because of the accident and did not reopen until just after 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The Times of Trenton reported that state police said the fiery crash involved three tractor-trailers. Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams said that the trucks burst into flames and were fully engulfed when firefighters arrived on the scene.

At least one of the tractor-trailers was believed to be carrying rock salt.

The accident, which occurred north of Interchange 8 near mile marker 69, left a backup for several miles.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash and have not yet released the name of the victim.

A helicopter overhead captured footage of the aftermath.
