Fifteen missing church group hikers found, rescued

Fifteen hikers who went missing in Southern California on Sunday were located and reunited with their families a day later.

The Associated Press reported that the hikers made up of 11 adults and four juveniles were rescued by a Los Angeles County sheriff's helicopter and have since been reunited with their loved ones.

The Los Angeles Times noted that the young adults and teens who became lost in the San Gabriel Mountains are all part of the Huntington Pike church group. After repelling down the Eaton Canyon Natural Area, they were exhausted and decided to build a fire and wait to be rescued. The group described their experience being out in the wilderness overnight.

"We were wet, we were tired, but we just decided that the best thing we could do is just stay there and rest," said 22-year-old Nancy Picado. "It was safer for us to just wait until morning."

Everyone in the group was checked out by a medical staff. Some were treated for hypothermia and others were treated for leg injuries, however no one suffered any life-threatening injuries.

Numerous people have to be rescued from the park every year and in 2011, five people died in the area. In 2013, a 17-year-old girl was killed after falling from a cliff and sustaining a head injury.
