Jared Leto considered for Joker role in Warner Bros.' 'Suicide Squad'

Jared Leto still hasn’t figured out how to follow up his Oscar-winning supporting part in Dallas Buyers Club, but this could be one heck of a way to do it. He is reportedly being considered for the Joker role in Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad.

A source told TheWrap late Friday that Leto is circling the part. Of course, reps for both the studio and the actor didn’t comment on the report.

It’s not clear how far along talks are between Leto and Warner Bros., but The Hollywood Reporter notes that the talks are likely in the very early stages.

Warner Bros. had hoped to get Ryan Gosling for the part and he was on the studio’s wish list that was reported last month. However, Gosling has been apprehensive about booking a superhero project, especially since it would require signing on for more than one movie.

The Suicide Squad film will be directed by Fury’s David Ayer and is scheduled for release on Aub. 5, 2016. No stars have officially been signed, but Latino Review reported last month that Cara Delevingne was being considered for the Harley Quinn role. As DC Comics fans know, Quinn is usually the Joker’s sidekick, so it would make sense for Batman’s No. 1 villain to appear in the film.

The Joker is easily the most iconic comic book villain in the DC universe. Leto would have to fill in some big shoes, since Jack Nicholson played the character in 1989’s Batman and Heath Ledger gave an Oscar-winning performance in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Leto was also reportedly being considered for Marvel’s Doctor Strange movie, but that role appears to be going to Benedict Cumberbatch. The actor is also the frontman for 30 Seconds To Mars and took several years off from acting before making his return to Hollywood in Dallas Buyers Club.
