Lake-effect snow hammers New York State, claims several lives

Lake-effect snow dumped more than 5 feet in areas around Buffalo and the storm is being blamed for the several deaths in New York State.

The Buffalo News reported that the blizzard is not over yet and residents can expect even more snow before they completely dig out. Two lake-effect snow warnings have been posted for Wednesday and will last through Friday with another 2 feet of snow forecast for some towns.

“It’s two separate events,” said Dave Zaff, National Weather Service meteorologist. “This first event will largely weaken and dissipate. Then, another surge of cold air re-energizes and creates a separate lake-effect event.”

The first major snowstorm of the year shutdown roadways, left people stranded in their cars and is being blamed for several deaths.

WCBV noted that officials in Erie County said a 46-year-old man was found dead Wednesday morning in his car that was buried in snow. In addition, authorities said that two people died from heart attacks while shoveling and another victim died after getting pinned under a car he was trying to get out of the snow.

Rescuers have their work cut for them as they are using snowmobiles and walking through the snow trying to help stranded motorists who are still trapped in their vehicles at this time.
