Miami Marlins talking mega-deal with slugger Giancarlo Stanton

The Miami Marlins ownership is known for being a bit stingy, but the team is hoping to make a major leap by offering slugger Giancarlo Stanton the biggest contract in the history of professional sports.

MLB sources told Fox Sports on Thursday that the Marlins and Stanton are talking about a deal that’s at least 10 years, $300 million. One source said that the contract could be as much as 12 years, $320 million.

Either way, if Stanton signs for that, he would be the highest-paid player in professional sports ever. That easily beats the deal Miguel Cabrera signed with the Detroit Tigers earlier this year. Over 10 years, Cabrera will earn $292 million.

ESPN reports that Marlins president of baseball operations Mike Hill already made it clear that they are talking with Stanton’s agent, Joel Wolfe. Clearly, signing Stanton is their top priority.

Stanton is only 25, but already has 154 career home runs and doesn’t officially become a free agent until after 2016. He likely would have won the NL MVP award if his 2014 season wasn’t cut short when he was hit by a pitch on Sept. 11.

He finished 2014 with 37 home runes and a .55 slugging percentage. The Marlins finished the season 77-85, breaking a three-year streak of finishing last in the NL East. It was the most wins for the team since 2010.

One key issue for Stanton may be a no-trade clause. Hill did say that they were willing to talk about adding it into his contract.
