Texas A&M students steal spotlight from Westboro Baptist Church protesters

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church hate group were at Texas A&M University on Monday to protest the university’s policies, but students made sure that their messages of hate were not heard.

WBC members started picketing outside the university in College Station, Texas bright and early Monday morning. Still, A&M students were up with them, making sure that messages of peace could drown out the WBC’s anti-gay messages.

One member of WBC, Steve Drain, told KBTX that A&M students are fed lies from parents, teachers and preachers.

Rather than violently react to WBC being on their campus, students made signs that read “All You Need Is Love” and “God Hates No One.” They also called for an impromptu Yell Practice to make sure WBC couldn’t be heard and the birth of the U.S. Marine Corps.

“Their message is just one of pure hate, and it's not something we want people to listen to,” organizer Elyssa De Caprio told KBTX.

The Houston Chronicle reports that members of the WBC next went to Houston to protest the city’s new equal rights ordinance. However, they were also countered by Houston’s First Unitarian Universalist Church.
